Hine Coach House

Shelter Island, New York

Project Type:

Project Overview

A stately 6 bedroom summer home built in the 1870’s, has been the family summer residence for over 40 years. Mr. And Mrs. Hine wished to utilize the property for more visits during the year. While maintaining the original summer homes ambiance, it was decided that the best solution was to build a separate “coach house” on the property, which would serve as a year around retreat from their Manhattan apartment. The coach house was designed under strict local historic design criteria to fit into the site and village and echo the Victorian splendor of the larger summer home. The coach house which includes a 6 car garage, work shop, 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, great room, den and small kitchen, sailed through the design review commission scrutiny with comments such as: “a compliment to the historic fabric of our village.” After construction, a neighbor complimented the Hines on the “removal of those trees so she could see the old coach house she had forgot was there…”
